The year is 1996. A discarded Jumanji board game washes ashore, transforming into a video game cartridge, a relic of a bygone era. Fast forward to present day, where four vastly different high school students find themselves in detention. There’s Spencer Gilpin, the nerdy gamer; Anthony “Fridge” Johnson, the star athlete sidelined by grades; Bethany Walker, the selfie-obsessed queen bee; and Martha Kaply, the fiercely independent and introverted intellectual. Discovering the old Jumanji console, they impulsively decide to play. With a rumble and a flash, the four are sucked into the game, each inhabiting an avatar: Spencer becomes the muscular Dr. Smolder Bravestone, Fridge is the diminutive Franklin ‘Mouse’ Finbar, Bethany transforms into the portly Professor Sheldon ‘Shelly’ Oberon, and Martha becomes the lethal Ruby Roundhouse. Lost in the dense jungle, they soon encounter Nigel Billingsley, their guide, who reveals the game’s deadly stakes: recover the stolen Jewel of Jumanji from the villainous Van Pelt, or be trapped in the game forever. The jungle is alive, and Jumanji is no longer a game; it’s a fight for survival.
