The imposing halls of the Museum of Natural History stood silent, unaware of the impending chaos. Desperate for a job to prove himself to his son, Nick Daley, the down-on-his-luck Larry Daley takes the night watchman position, replacing the retiring Cecil, Gus, and Reginald – three elderly guards guarding a secret they dared not speak of. As the city sleeps, Larry soon discovers that the museum’s exhibits are anything but still. A mysterious Egyptian tablet triggers an ancient magic, and suddenly, Theodore Roosevelt, mounted on his steed, comes to life, along with Attila the Hun, a fearsome warrior ready for battle. Now, caught in the middle of a historical free-for-all, Larry must team up with a familiar face, the knowledgeable Rebecca, to restore order before dawn and save the museum from utter pandemonium, proving to everyone, especially himself, that he’s not a failure.

Larry Daley, a well-meaning but perpetually unemployed single father, desperately needs a job to prove to his son, Nick Daley, that he can be a responsible role model. He takes a job as a night watchman at the Museum of Natural History, replacing three elderly guards, Cecil, Gus, and Reginald, who seem suspiciously eager to retire. On his first night, Larry is shocked to discover that, thanks to an ancient Egyptian tablet, all the exhibits come to life after dark. Chaos ensues as Larry struggles to control a rampaging Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton, a miniature Roman army led by Octavius battling Jedediah, a cowboy figurine, and Attila the Hun, who leads his horde on a destructive rampage through the museum. Larry, overwhelmed and terrified, considers quitting, but after an inspiring pep talk from the wax figure of Theodore Roosevelt, he resolves to master his new reality. However, the old guards, Cecil, Gus, and Reginald, return with a sinister plan to steal the tablet, using the animated exhibits to aid their heist. Larry, with the help of Theodore Roosevelt, the affections of Sacagawea, and even the reluctant assistance of Attila, must band together with the exhibits to stop the rogue guards, save the museum, and finally prove to his son that he is capable of anything.
